Hertfordshire Waste Disposal

Securing the future of Hertfordshire's Waste Disposal

Surely a rubbish tip is the last place you'd expect to find protected by security cameras?

Not anymore.  A brand new household waste and recycling centre at Waterdale, Hertfordshire has been fitted with an IP Security system including ten security cameras as part of Hertfordshire County Council's Waste Management Strategy.

Hertfordshire residents produce more than a tonne of rubbish per household, per year - that's a pile of almost 200 black plastic sacks.  This amount is growing and by 2007 the County's landfill sites will be full to the brim.  In addition, Councils are facing tough new laws that put a limit on the kinds of rubbish they can put into landfill sites.

In order to combat these problems it is necessary to obtain quantitative waste information, analyse trends and attempt to project future quantities and assess the facilities needed.  The collection of accurate and reliable information has always been difficult, until now.

The new Waterdale centre has installed 10 Mobotix IP Network security and surveillance cameras, not just to deter intruders, such as fly tippers, but to help acquire the necessary disposal data and ensure the new legislation is adhered to.

The Mobotix IP Network Security Camera system, designed by Batt networks was favoured over a traditonal CCTV system primarily due to the increased clarity of the images and ease of retrieval of archive images.  Dean farrant of Network and Cabling Solutions who installed the system comments, "other selling points of the mobotix IP system are that it allows remote monitoring of the site from any PC, it is maintenance free and the cameras can be upgraded remotely free of charge."

A Mobotix IP Security camera located at the entrance records vehicle registration plates, and therefore can be used to provide statistics on the number and type of vehicles using the site.  The images are then stored on a central server and can be accessed from any location.  Further Mobotix IP Network Security cameras allow vehicle movement monitoring and the collection of information on quantities of type of waste, so that the data can be used to secure the future of Hertfordshire's waste disposal.
